The Acheloos River, also known as the Aspropotamos, is the second longest river in Greece. It originates from the Pindos Mountain range and flows into the Ionian Sea, after a route of about 220 km. It passes through the Prefecture of Trikala, through the borders of the Prefectures of Karditsa and Arta, as well as through the borders of the Prefectures of Evritania and Aitoloakarnania. It separates Acarnania from Aetolia, successively crossing the artificial lakes of Kremasta, Kastraki and Stratos, while it is an important source of irrigation for the plain of Agrinio.
