Kechropoulas castle is built at an altitude of 272 meters, on the homonymous hill located at the western end of Acarnania, opposite Lefkada. In ancient times it held an important strategic position that supervised the wider area and dominated the lake of Vulkaria. Remains of buildings and ruins related to the ancient city of Palairos have been found inside. The fortification enclosure, with a total length of about 2 km, is maintained in fairly good condition and is one of the most amazing examples of Akarnanian fortification art.
