Church of Pantokratoros

The Holy Temple of the Pantocrator of Patras is located in Ano Poli, below the Fortress, and is known for its elaborate domes. The first sanctuary was built in 900 AD. on the ruins of an ancient temple dedicated to Olympian Zeus, which was the center of the Ancient Agora. In 1205 it was converted to Roman Catholicism after the Franks occupied Patras until 1429, when Constantine Paleologos liberated the city. During the Turkish occupation, it functioned as a mosque with the name Kyursum Mosque, which means Leaded Mosque, because the dome of the temple was covered with lead. The present majestic church was built during the years 1835 - 1840, after the Liberation, in the style of a three-aisled basilica with domes, in imitation of the design of the Holy Hagia Sophia in Istanbul. The church has a dual existence as a second side has been consecrated in honor of Saint Eleftherios to the right of the central Holy Table, where part of the Saint's hand has been kept since 1870. This point of interest is Plain and Urban. Suitable season to visit: All-year-round. It is accessible through public transport. It has no fee or ticket. Source of photographic material: Wikipedia.
