The Holy Monastery of Agios Nikolaos, also known as the Old Monastery, was founded in the late 6th to early 7th century at the foot of Mount Panacheikos, near the settlement of Bala, at a height of 500 meters. The historic monastery was destroyed many times until 1945 with the result that no written historical evidence survives, however the oral tradition and a marble slab on the north exterior of the Catholicos testify that the monastery was rebuilt in 1693. Important acquisitions of the monastery are part of Holy Wood, some relics of Saints and the miraculous icon of Agios Nikolaos dating back to 1933. This point of interest is Plain and Rural.
