Agios Andreas Church (new)

The Church of Agios Andreas in Patras is the largest Orthodox church in Greece and one of the largest in the Balkans. It is dedicated to the patron saint of the city, the first-called Apostle Andrew, and together with the old Holy Temple of St. Andrew next to it, they constitute a sacred pan-Hellenic and pan-Orthodox pilgrimage. Its construction began in 1908 and the inauguration took place in 1974. It is a temple of Byzantine style with an area of ​​about 2600 sq.m. The central dome is dominated by a gilded cross with a length of 5 meters while in the other domes are located 12 smaller ones, thus symbolizing Jesus Christ and the twelve Apostles. Inside the church there are relics of St. Andrew and parts of the cross on which he martyred in the city of Patras, around 60 AD, but also impressive mosaics and frescoes of Byzantine mentality.
