Church of Agios Nikolaos

The historic Church of Agios Nikolaos is located in the center of Patras, next to the homonymous stairs of Agios Nikolaos which connect Ano with Kato. Its presence has a long history in the city as it refers to the area from Byzantine times, at least from 1329 AD. Within it, the inhabitants swore allegiance to Constantine Paleologos, shortly before he was crowned emperor, in 1430. In historical records, it is mentioned either as a parish or Metropolitan church or as a Holy Monastery. An older one had been built on the site of the present church, but it was destroyed by an explosion of the fortress powder keg in 1811 and restored in 1818. Inside, on 6-12-1828, the people of Patras celebrated their Liberation from the Turks. The church, as it is today, was built in 1885. This point of interest is Plain and Urban. Suitable season to visit: All-year-round. It is accessible through public transport. It has no fee or ticket.
