The Metropolitan Church of Agios Nikolaos dominates the central square of Pyrgos. It is a three-aisled basilica and has a total area of ​​about 1,000 square meters, which makes it one of the largest churches in the capital of the Prefecture of Ileia. It is an ecclesiastical monument of the 19th century, unique in its kind, something that justifies its characterization as a Monument of Modern Cultural Heritage. Inside it carries great portable icons, which are donated by citizens and associations. It suffered significant damage from the catastrophic earthquake of 2008, as a result of which it had to remain closed for a few years, until its reconstruction work was completed.
