Holy Monastery of Agios Nikolaos Frankopidimatos

The Holy Monastery of Frangopidimatos is located on a rock north of the village of Vounargo, between Pyrgos and Amaliada. This is a historic monastery, dedicated to Agios Nikolaos and founded in the early 14th century. Its period of prosperity is marked during the Frankish rule and the Ottoman rule, while after its decline until today, it functions as a nunnery. It consists of large two-storey buildings, containing the monks' cells and other auxiliary spaces. In the middle of the buildings dominates the central church of the Monastery, which belongs to the type of royal architecture. Due to severe damage that it suffered by earthquakes, it was rebuilt and became more majestic, according to the standards of the Byzantine style. The Monastery celebrates on December 6, the day of Agios Nikolaos. This point of interest is Mountainous and Rural. Suitable season to visit: All-year-round. It is not accessible through public transport. It has no fee or ticket. Source of photographic material: Holy Metropolis of Ileia.
