The Church of Agios Athanasios is located on the east side of the city of Pyrgos, on one of the seven hills of the area. It was built between the 15th and 16th centuries and was originally a wooden structure, which may have functioned as a monastery. Its construction is based on designs by the famous architect Ernesto Ziller, while after 1898 it was rebuilt and completely changed its form. Now, the church has the style of a basilica with a dome and externally consists of stone, which reaches to the roof. Inside is kept the miraculous icon of the Virgin Mary.
