The archeological site of Kato Samikos is located north of Lake Caiaphas, on the western slopes of the Lapitha mountain range. It is an ancient city that included a prehistoric and a classical citadel. The first extends on the rocky hill Klidi, while the second is located east of the ancient city. The classic acropolis had a Roman bath and an early Christian church and had a lifespan from the 4th century BC. to Roman times. The whole city was in a strategic position, because it connected Pisatida with Trifylia and western Messinia and had the dominance of the fertile plain of Samikos.
