The monument of Giannis Gounaris, or the Monk of Kleisoura, dominates in the Garden of Heroes. Omer Vryonis decided to attack to Mesolongi in December of 1822, on Christmas Eve, when the believers would have been in the churches. Giannis Gounaris who was a follower of Omer Vryonis revealed the plan to the people of Mesolongi, and the attack failed. Pasha found out who betrayed him and to took revenge he killed his family. Gounaris found shelter in Kleisoura’s cave, where, after the Liberation he built a church dedicated to Panagia Eleousa and became an anchorite until his death. This point of interest is Flat and Urban. It is accessible all year round. It is accessible through public transport. It has no fee or ticket.
