The company "Railways of Northwestern Greece" (SVDE) was founded in early March 1890 while on the 15th of the same month, the railway line Messolonghi - Agrinio began to operate. Τhe following year was extended to Kryoneri, to be connected by steam to Patras and lines of the Railways Piraeus - Athens - Peloponnese (SPAP). In 1952 the company went bankrupt and the operation of the railway network redeemed by S.P.AP. which in turn were absorbed by the "Railways of the Greek State" (S.E.K) In 1971 the operation of the entire railway network was suspended, as it was characterized as excessive deficit. At the railway museum exhibition of Messolonghi at the entrance of the city, the steam engine A 7003 is exhibited. The steam engine bears the name "TRIKOUPIS".
